Taking a step – The psychology of needs and your business

Understanding the psychology of money requires a look at industrial psychology 101 — needs-based behaviours.

Needs-based Behaviors:

Abraham Maslow, an Industrial Psychologist, theorized that all people share certain basic needs.  Maslow said that we can’t satisfy higher-level needs until lower-level needs are satisfied. For example, our need for friendship would not be a major need until and unless we have satisfied our need for food and shelter.

Maslow said that we can categorize these needs as follows:

  1. SECURITY/SAFETY: Physical needs consisting of Physiological Needs (food, shelter), followed by Security Needs (protection, order).
  2. AFFILIATION: Social Needs consisting of a Sense of Belonging and Love (friendship, affection).
  3. POWER:  Social Needs also include the need for Recognition and Respect (success and prestige)
  4. LEARNING:  Mental Needs deal with Self-Actualization, the need to reach our full potential.

Where we all want to travel to is to the Performing Stage of developing our business.  This takes problem-solving strategies, insights, and determination.

Take a moment and decide what stage in your problem-solving business development you are at.

Check off which stage you are at present:

__________Forming Stage

__________Storming Stage

__________Norming Stage

__________Performing Stage

I want/need to move to the next stage and that, for me, would be the

(Identify the stage you’re after.)

Stay awake, aware, and alert and strive to lead a well-tempered life – a life that possesses both hardiness and flexibility.  The good news is that once you are awake, it’s hard to go to sleep again, but if you do, do it on purpose and prepare yourself for the consequences.
